How to Get an Agent to Come to You: Another Road to Publication

  • Mechanics' Hall 519 Congress Street Portland, ME 04101 (map)

A 8-Week Business of Writing Workshop

Wednesdays, April 8 - June 3*, 6-8 PM

In this workshop, author Nick Fuller Googins will share one of the greatest tips he received in his writing career: instead of spending hundreds of hours querying literary agents, what if you got them to come to you?

The workshop will be both informative and generative, ultimately centering around strategic submissions to literary magazines, in order to draw the attention of literary agents and editors. We will examine the rich ecosystems of literary magazines, we will discuss how to turn longer works into excerpts for submission, and we will practice writing solid cover letters to accompanying submissions. Nick will share from his time as a reader for a prestigious literary magazine, and what he learned to help get through the “slush pile” and onto an editor’s desk.

The workshop will also focus on participants’ writing. We will closely read a number of stories and excerpts from a variety of literary magazines, to see what works best. We will then read each other’s submissions, in a traditional workshop model, focusing on a few participants per week, providing feedback and constructive criticism. Lastly, each participant will make an individualized submission plan, and end the course by preparing a batch of 5-10 submissions.

This course is applicable to all genres, including fiction, nonfiction, and poetry.

*No class on April 22.

$275 Members/$475 Nonmembers
