The Art of the Essay

  • Waterfall Arts 256 High Street Belfast, ME (map)

A 6-Week In-Person Creative Nonfiction Workshop

Wednesdays, April 8 - May 13, 6 - 8 PM

This course treats the essay as an art form, shaped by many of the same considerations as visual art—composition, balance, texture, pacing, and the interplay between form and meaning. Students will learn how to shape raw material into effective essays—organizing structure, blending reflection with dramatized scenes, building narrative arcs, and working with characterization, description, dialogue, and vivid detail. Over our six weeks together, we’ll explore a range of forms, including the lyric, segmented, braided, and personal essay. Students will also have the opportunity to read and analyze exemplary models while also experimenting with best practices in the genre. A special emphasis will be placed on drafting and workshopping original work in a supportive, informal studio environment.
