A 1-Day Poetry Workshop
Saturday, August 22, 10 - 11:30 AM
Join author and poet Maggie Dewane for a nature-inspired poetry workshop and reading. Beginning with a brief history of haiku, the workshop will move through creative writing warm-ups and highlight the benefits of nature journaling, a foundation of both haiku and everyday mindfulness. Weather permitting, participants will be led through writing prompts while outdoors, gathering inspiration from what we experience around us. By the end of the workshop, participants will have written their own haiku drawing inspiration from their favorite places or the time spent outside. The workshop invites participants to share their work, but it is not required.

Maggie Dewane is an author, filmmaker, and former journalist who has traveled to all seven continents to understand climate change, conservation efforts, and how both impact people. Through short films, news articles, and poetry, she translates climate science to lay audiences to empower them to act. Her first book, Haiku and Hope: 50 States of Climate Change, explores the country, places beloved and unfamiliar, and considers what's at stake if we fail to act, then provides guidance for how we can work together to protect the places we love.
Her professional experience spans the U.S. Senate, White House Council on Environmental Quality, Environmental Investigation Agency, Center for Progressive Reform, and currently the national nonprofit Defenders of Wildlife. She serves on the Board of Directors to Birdability, a nonprofit connecting people with disabilities to the outdoors through birding, as well as on the Advisory Council to the Environmental Film Festival in the Nation’s Capital. She leads an annual weeklong educational science and nature camp for adults in Maine with the Audubon Society. Maggie holds a B.S. from Seton Hall University in diplomacy and international relations and an M.P.A. from Columbia University in environmental science and policy.
