Journey to Poem Publication

A 2-Day Hybrid Workshop on Poetry & Publishing

Wednesdays, August 14 & 21, 6-9 PM

Have you ever wanted to publish a poem but don’t know where to start? This two-part workshop will include poem creation and revision, followed by tips on how to get that first acceptance.

Session 1: Writing + Revision

The first day will consist of poem generation. Focus will be on the personal writing process and finding your voice. We will explore forms and study the work of artists like (but not limited to) Chen Chen, Hanif Abdurraqib, Ocean Vuong and Olatunde Osinaike. Be ready to do some peer review of our free writes!

Session 2: Preparing Poems for Submission

We will finish the workshop by breaking down the publishing process, answering the question “When is a poem ready to submit?” By the end of this session, you’ll have your own third person bio and grow familiar with the many approaches to submitting. As a former poetry editor, I’d be happy to look over a piece (new or old) and give tips!

+ PLEASE NOTE This workshop will occur IN-PERSON and ONLINE via Zoom. For online attendance, students do not need to create an account to participate, but should test out Zoom before their class if they are first-time users. The week of the workshop, students will be emailed a link that they may click to enter the class.

+ REQUIRED EQUIPMENT A reliable, fast internet connection (broadband wired or wireless (3G or 4G/LTE), speakers & a microphone (built-in or USB plug-in), and a webcam (built-in or USB plug-in).
