Good, Better, Best: Prose Revision Intensive

A 2-Day Prose Workshop

Saturday, August 17 and Sunday, August 18, 1-4 PM

To revise, literally, is to “see again”. As writers, we sometimes lose the ability to see our work after so many hours of looking at it. In this workshop, we will work at the sentence level to strengthen and clarify our language as well as at a higher level to ask questions of structure and tone. This workshop is for any prose writer with a piece or excerpt that feels nearly ready but needs a final round of guided revision. We will share excerpts before our class, exchange feedback in a condensed workshop, and work through strategies to integrate feedback into revision.

+ PLEASE NOTE This workshop will occur IN-PERSON and ONLINE via Zoom. Online students do not need to create an account to participate, but should test out Zoom before their class if they are first-time users. The week of the workshop, students will be emailed a link that they may click to enter the class.

+ REQUIRED EQUIPMENT A reliable, fast internet connection (broadband wired or wireless (3G or 4G/LTE), speakers & a microphone (built-in or USB plug-in), and a webcam (built-in or USB plug-in).

Meredith McCarroll is a writer and writing teacher living in Portland. Her work has appeared in SalonBitter SouthernerAvidlySouthern CulturesStillCutleafCleaver and elsewhere. McCarroll is the author of Unwhite: Appalachia, Race, and Film (University of Georgia Press). Along with Anthony Harkins, McCarroll edited Appalachian Reckoning: A Region Responds to Hillbilly Elegy (West Virginia University Press) which won the Weatherford Award and the American Book Award. McCarroll is currently at work on a book project that explores lineage and inheritance, reckons with claims to place and culture, and explores what we literally pass down through blood but also what we inherit through proximity.
