Winter Harvest: A Generative Workshop On & For the Long Poem

An IN-PERSON Poetry Workshop

ALL LEVELS

In this workshop, we will examine writing by poets (e.g., Allen Ginsburg, Charles Olson, Imtiaz Dharker, James Schuyler, Joe Brainard, Layli Long Soldier, Margaret Atwood, Naomi Shihab Nye, Ocean Vuong, Rita Dove, Sylvia Plath, Toi Derricotte, Wallace Stevens, William Shakespeare, and others) to see the various approaches to writing a long poem and/or as context for several interrelated writing prompts. The writing prompts will either be *proprioceptive exercises or simply creating lists. You will even participate in a writing exercise during the lunch break: record the external world and your internal dialogue concerning it. These prompts and writing exercises are meant for you to simply collect information, to suspend the impulse to write a poem until this collective gleaning process has been completed, and then you will assemble this gleaned information in an order that complicates time and narrative.

*“Proprioceptive Writing is widely recognized as an adjunct to the therapeutic arts, a form of meditation, and a valuable writing tool, both for people wishing to write and for those facing writing blocks. The method is to write as fast as you can so as to not allow your editorial or judgmental or doubting minds to interrupt.”

+ PLEASE NOTE This workshop will occur IN-PERSON. The week of the workshop, attendees will be emailed the exact location of the class.
