This Must Be the Place: How Language Takes us There

A 3-Week ONLINE Fiction Workshop

Thursdays, July 11-25, 6-9 PM

How do authors effectively render settings and reflect the reality of their characters within those fictional places? How do we, as writers, capture the unique, myriad ways setting shapes our characters? In this three-week generative workshop, we will explore how sensory language brings setting to life and how that setting informs, motivates, and limits our characters. We will look closely at several authors who use language to evoke place, to emphasize their characters’ actions and decisions, and to connect the reader to the singular landscapes of their stories. Writers should come with a specific setting in mind and be ready to engage in exercises designed to take a deep dive into the language they use to bring that setting to life.

+ PLEASE NOTE This workshop will occur online via Zoom. Students do not need to create an account to participate, but should test out Zoom before their class if they are first-time users. The week of the workshop, students will be emailed a link that they may click to enter the test session and the class.
