The Structure and Performance of Live Storytelling

By telling true, personal stories, we unearth universal human experiences. Storytelling is sharing our vulnerabilities, discoveries, and struggles, which bonds us by way of identification and empathy.

In this workshop, participants will internalize the elements of an impactful story and learn how to tell one. All participants will be telling a five-minute true, personal story at the end of the class. To maximize personalized attention, this workshop is limited to 10 participants.

Agenda:

Introductions and ice breaker (20 minutes)

What is and is not story? (30 minutes)

Watch a story and analyze (50 minutes)

Students to write a mini story each (20 minutes)

Break (30 minutes)

A story by the instructor (5 minutes)

Presentation and Q&A (60 minutes)

Redoing stories and finals preparation (30 minutes)

Five-minute stories by students (50 minutes)

Closing remarks (5 minutes)

+ PLEASE NOTE This workshop will occur online, using the video meeting platform Zoom, which means students may participate from the comfort of their own homes (or anywhere with a reliable, fast internet connection). Students do not need to create an account to participate, but should test out Zoom before their class if they are first-time users. On Thursday, July 23, from 5:00pm to 6:00pm, MWPA’s Hannah Perry will offer a test session on Zoom. Students are strongly encouraged to participate in the test session, which usually takes only 5-10 minutes, and those who do not are responsible for ensuring that they are able to use Zoom on their own. The week of the workshop, students will be emailed a link that they may click to enter the test session and the class.

+ REQUIRED EQUIPMENT A reliable, fast internet connection (broadband wired or wireless (3G or 4G/LTE), speakers & a microphone (built-in or USB plug-in), and a webcam (built-in or USB plug-in).
