A 2 Day Poetry Workshop
Saturday August 6th and Saturday August 13th

The pandemic has damaged and disrupted our lives in myriad ways . . . including, for many of us, our attempts—even our ability—to write and read productively. In this two-session generative poetry class, we’ll focus on regaining some purchase in our writing lives. With inspiration from both contemporary and classic poets, we’ll read and talk about poetry drafts as present-tense enactments, focusing on ways to write from where and how we are, not from how we expect ourselves to be. The sessions are open to anyone, at any level of experience, and will include conversation, prompts, and generous writing time.
+ PLEASE NOTE This workshop will occur online via Zoom. Students do not need to create an account to participate, but should test out Zoom before their class if they are first-time users. On Thursday August 4th from 5:30pm to 6:00pm, MWPA staff will offer a tech help session on Zoom. Students are encouraged to attend the tech help session, which usually takes only 5-10 minutes, if they have any tech concerns, use Zoom infrequently, or simply would like to test their connection, and those who do not are responsible for ensuring that they are able to use Zoom on their own. The week of the workshop, students will be emailed a link that they may click to enter the test session and the class.

Dawn Potter is the creative director of the Frost Place Studio Sessions as well as the director of the Frost Place Conference on Poetry and Teaching, both associated with Robert Frost's home in Franconia, New Hampshire. In addition, she leads the high school writing program at Monson Arts. When not teaching, she works as a manuscript consultant and as a freelance editor for literary and academic presses. Dawn was a finalist for the 2020 National Poetry Series. She is the author or editor of nine books of prose and poetry--most recently, the poetry collection Accidental Hymn. Her memoir, Tracing Paradise: Two Years in Harmony with John Milton, won the 2010 Maine Literary Award in Nonfiction, and she has received grants and fellowships from the Elizabeth George Foundation, the Writer's Center, and the Maine Arts Commission. Her poems and essays have appeared in the Beloit Poetry Journal, the Sewanee Review, the Threepenny Review, the Times Literary Supplement, and many other journals in the United States and abroad.

All MWPA workshops require advanced registration. We accept registration by phone, mail, and online via our website. We cannot guarantee registration in the final 24-hours before a workshop, and can rarely accommodate day-of registration.
