Making Your Setting Matter

A 5-Week Online Creative Nonfiction Workshop

Sundays, July 1 - August 19*, 6:30 - 9 PM

Fiction writers are able to create settings that match the vibe of the story they've set out to tell, while Non-Fiction writers must make meaning of the place where the story actually happened. So how do we do that? In this class, we will practice writing first person, personal essays where the setting is part of the story being told. We will look at works from Carmen Maria Machado, Hanif Abdurraqib, and local New England writers to guide us on selecting moments from our lives where the place of that moment can become part of the narrative. Each student will receive three essay assignments, and be workshopped at least once over the course of this six-week course.

*No class on July 22.

$275 Members/$475 Nonmembers

Theresa Okokon is an award-winning writer, storyteller, and teacher. A Wisconsinite living in New England, she is the co-host of Stories From The Stage who—in addition to writing and performing her own stories—also teaches storytelling and writing, coaches other tellers, hosts story slams, and emcees events for nonprofits. An alum of both the Memoir Incubator and Essay Incubator programs at GrubStreet, Theresa's memoir of essays about memory, family stories, and the death of her father -- titled WHO I ALWAYS WAS -- will be published by Atria Books at Simon & Schuster on February 4, 2025.
