Revelry and Reverie: Playful Revising Strategies for Picture Book Manuscripts

  • Edward O. Darling Room, Bangor Public Library 145 Harlow Street Bangor, ME (map)

A 4-Week Picture Book Workshop

Saturdays, May 9 - 30, 10 AM - 1 PM

If you have a picture book manuscript stowed in a drawer or a manuscript that needs work but you’re unsure what to do next, this workshop is for you.

One of the beauties of writing picture books is that it is easy to play with alternatives when your story is less than 700 words. This workshop will start with a brief overview of the characteristics of picture book manuscripts so we know what we’re aiming for and then we will explore different entry points for revision. Workshop goals are for attendees to develop their draft, improve their ability to determine what to focus on for their next round of revision, and leave with a big bag full of revision strategies and activities to try in the future. Meghan will also be sharing processes and tips from picture book author and author illustrator colleagues who they interviewed for this workshop. Participants will be welcome to share their drafts for feedback in class, so we can practice together, and all attendees are welcome to at least one round of feedback from Meghan whether we share in class or you received feedback directly. This workshop will also help folks who are new to working with critique partners or critiques groups feel more confident in giving and receiving feedback in addition to having strategies for revising on their own.

· What do you do when you’re not sure what to do next on an early draft?

· How do you figure out what to focus on first when you know there is a lot of things to work on?

· How do you figure out what your process is or what helps you move forward? (Timing, sequence, things you try, what helps, etc.)

· How do you work with crit partners or crit groups in a way that helps you get the feedback you need and give others useful feedback?
