Picture Book Dummy Writing with X. Fang

  • Mechanics' Hall 519 Congress Street Portland United States (map)

A 2-Week Picture Book Workshop

Saturdays: November 22 & 29, 10 AM - 1 PM

In this workshop, authors and illustrators will learn the craft of picture book making through practice book dummies. By focusing on the technical elements that go into a picture book (ie: book jacket, case cover, page count, page turn, text layout, etc), participants gain an understanding of how these elements aid the telling of a story. We will explore ways text and picture compete with each other on a page, and finding ways to show, rather than tell, and vice versa. We will look at ways contemporary book makers play with the parameters of the picture book space, discovering limitation in the medium can lead to more creativity. Authors who “can’t draw” and illustrators who “can’t write” are encouraged to take this class as there are plenty of examples of pictureless picture books and textless picture book that we can take inspiration from. At the end of the workshop, participants will gain the knowledge and skills to create a picture book dummy for submissions.

What you’ll need for this class: 11x17 drawing pad, drawing materials of your choice (you can be creative! Bring stuff in for collage making), and a story idea.

$120 Members/$175 Nonmembers
