Meditative Writing

An 8-Week In-Person Poetry & Prose Workshop

Wednesdays: December 3 - February 4, 6 - 7:30 PM

This generative workshop applies the concept of meditation to developing a contemplative writing practice. Our reading and writing work in this class participates in long traditions, from many cultures, of writing as contemplative practice. Each week begins with reading and discussion of a meditative prompting text, object, or centering phrase. As Basho writes, “One must concentrate one’s thoughts on an object. Once the mind achieves a state of concentration and the space between oneself and the object had disappeared, the essential nature of the object can be perceived. Then express it immediately.” From these prompts, the workshop will generate writing that participants can choose to share as part of the discussion that develops during the workshop. Participants may choose to write poetry or prose in response to prompts, and may also choose whether or not to bring work each week created from inspiration the work previously. People should bring pen and paper for this meditative writing practice.
