A 2-Day Fiction Workshop
Saturdays, September 19 & 26, 10 AM - 12 PM
The essays, stories, and novels that have the deepest effect on a reader are ones where the writer has fully leaned into the voice of the narrative. This includes the POV and the theme or the narrator's obsession.
This two-day workshop is for writers who have a story they haven't been able to shake off. Prior to the workshop, participants will share a section of their work (maximum 5 pages) with the instructor, and with other participants. During each session, they will receive some feedback from everyone. We will discuss the major theme/idea that's visible in the work, and the voice it's asking to be told in. We will read excerpts of works where the writer has fully embraced the theme, and adopted a voice that shows it best. Participants will also be given prompts that will help them exercise this.

Farah Ali is the writer of the novel The River, The Town (Dzanc) and the short-story collection People Want to Live (McSweeneys). Her work has been anthologized in the Pushcart Prize and the Best Small Fictions, and has appeared in Shenandoah, Kenyon Review, Ecotone, Virginia Quarterly Review and elsewhere. She is the cofounder of Lakeer, an online journal from Pakistan, and the Reviews Editor at Wasafiri. She lives in London where she writes and edits.
