An Online Generative YA/MG Writing Workshop
ALL LEVELS
Do you admire character-driven novels? Do you aspire to write one? This generative workshop is designed to guide you through the early stages of developing a character—one who will take you and your readers on a rewarding personal journey. During our time together, we’ll explore character voice, background, contradiction, desire lines, misbelief (similar to fatal flaw), and specificity. We will be reading Jass Hammonds, Margarita Engle, Marcella Pixley, Erin Entrada Kelly and Dan Gemeinhart. The exercises we will do together are designed to jump-start first-time writers and to give accomplished novelists the time and space to begin their next project.
+ PLEASE NOTE This workshop will occur ONLINE via Zoom. Students do not need to create an account to participate, but should test out Zoom before their class if they are first-time users. The week of the workshop, students will be emailed a link that they may click to enter the class.
+ REQUIRED EQUIPMENT A reliable, fast internet connection (broadband wired or wireless (3G or 4G/LTE), speakers & a microphone (built-in or USB plug-in), and a webcam (built-in or USB plug-in).

Jennifer Jacobson, a graduate of Harvard Graduate School of Education, is the author of many award-winning children’s books including Small as an Elephant (IRA Young Adult’s Choice, Parents’ Choice Gold Award), Paper Things (ILA Social Justice Award, NTCE Charlotte Huck Honorable Mention) and The Dollar Kids illustrated by Ryan Andrews (ABA IndieNext List and Bank Street Best Book of the Year). Her newest launches are a chapter book series (Twig and Turtle: Big Move to a Tiny House) and a middle grade romance: Crashing in Love. She lives in Woolwich Maine.
