Beginnings & Endings: A Fiction Workshop

A 1-Day Fiction Workshop

Wednesday, February 4, 6 - 9 PM

A beginning is a howl in an empty room, an ending its echo. A stunning beginning might render us gobsmacked or intrigued. The right ending provides closure or lives on in us long after the story is through. Beginnings and endings are often treated as discrete aspects of craft, but when brought together they can deepen our understanding of what a story means and how we understand a character’s wound or desires.

In this workshop we’ll excavate the beginnings and endings of short stories and novels to study what makes them move us. We’ll also workshop our own beginnings and endings, specifically how they function on a line level, a scene level, and thematically. To make this workshop most impactful, please bring the opening and closing pages of your story or chapter.
