A 5-Week Online Fiction Workshop
Thursdays: September 18 – October 16, 6-9PM
Writers tend to love the lyrical, often admiring language for language’s sake. But what can you do as a writer to compel your reader to continue on? Adding a small engine, the same kind found in many mystery novels, might help. In this workshop we will explore the use of mystery and how elements of this genre might add flair to your literary work.
We will look at examples of mystery writing and also explore our own mysteries. Our readings will include Jess Walters’ Land of the Blind as well as passages from The Art of Mystery (Graywolf Press). In addition, we will read select stories (instructor provided) and 1–2 workshop pieces (approx. 3,000 words/story) a week. Come prepared to workshop and delve further into this exciting form.
