Camden poet Dave Morrison will be reading new work at the Camden Public Library on Tuesday evening, September 28, at 6:30 pm. Morrison will read from his newest collection, SIX, and also from his work-in-progress Clubland featuring poems about rock bars written in verse. “All are welcome,” Morrison says, “especially those who don’t like poetry.” Admission is free. Steve Burt's novel, FreeK Camp: Psychic Teens in a Paranormal Thriller, has won the Best Beach Book Award for Teens (www.beachbookfestival.com) at the NY Book Festival. The story is set in and around Bridgton, Maine. Burt was a member of MWPA through the 1980s and 1990s, then moved to Connecticut. In 2004 he won the world's top dark fiction prize, The Bram Stoker Award, for his collection of (mostly) Maine weird tales, Oddest Yet. Last year the Rev. Writers of all ages and experience levels are invited to share their particular interests at Roscohegan: An Island Workshop for Writers, a one-day event on Saturday, July 17 from 10AM to 3:30 PM at the Georgetown Historical Society. For more than a century, Georgetown (known as Roscohegan to the Native Americans who hunted and fished here) has drawn artists, photographers, and writers to its shores. Its natural beauty inspires creativity and its history and island culture provide a sense of solitude and deep connection to people and place. The first part of the day includes an inspirational, leisurely stroll along Robinhood Cove led by keeper-of-local history and storyteller Gene Reynolds and lunch with artist and author of over 30 books, Dahlov Ipcar. After lunch, author Eve LaPlante (American Jezebel, Salem Witch Judge) will share her journey from journalism to historical non-fiction. Participants will then have a choice from three workshops: editor Lynn Betlock discusses writing family history articles; authors Jane Freeberg (A Scallop Christmas) and Emily Herman (Hubknuckles) share their experiences about writing for children; and poet Nancy Arbuthnot leads a session for writers of poetry. Attendees have the option to participate in all or only some of the day's activities.
Space is limited. Pre-registration is requested by Wednesday, June 30, 2010. A fee of $10 includes lunch and other refreshments.

Does anyone remember seeing a story like this on the local TV news, somewhere between 2000-2006? (landshark threatens to evict citing “not to carry on any business...” against a writer)
It was an argument about the meaning of a phrase in many leases:
"not to carry on any business, profession, or trade of any kind."
It is usually not enforced without a good reason, but one company chose to use this legalism against a writer, implying that having a product available on a web site violated this verse, and threatened to sue for eviction and payment of the rest of the year's rent. The name [removed, because I need to know for sure] seems familiar, but I'm not really sure why. I remember a comment on the show something like: this was a foolish thing to do even if it succeeds in court, because people would find out what happened here, and nobody would want to rent an apartment from that company*. (at least anyone who is a novelist, songwriter, poet, etc.)
She (the writer) ended up removing her book from the website, finish out the term of her lease without the freedom to have her work available, because she did not want to risk eviction and ruined credit, if she might lose the case. (heard this on the show)
At least I hope this kind of zero tolerance policy is extremely rare. If it were common practice, I would have found a story like that on Google by now (literally spent all-night sessions rephrasing this dispute over 100 different ways!). I believe this is a form of predatory lending, and infringement on the freedom of speech and press.
I am definitely interested in finding a copy of this broadcast if possible. I can understand if the footage is lost... in that case I am searching for someone who remembers the show well enough to reliably identify the parties involved. I figure my chances are better asking now than later.
It's also quite unbelievable and sad that even in the Tivo age, information that was on broadcast TV can become forgotten and disappear, when it effects something this important.
I may be interested in talking to the writer that was threatened. Maybe a petition could be named after her. - if something like that ever happens again.
(“13 on your side” seems most likely, yet Ms. Ichton claims not to remember this- maybe a similar series on another station?)

Many ups and downs in completing my first book but Mystery of the Dancing FireWalker will be available from AuthorHouse.com within two weeks. This is the first of at least four fictional/mystery novels I have called the Emily Jacobs Mysteries. Book 1 is about two children kidnapped and taken to a cabin in western Maine. Involving an ancient stone circle, a shaman, and several really neat bad guys, the children must partake in several healing ceremonies. What percentage of the U.S. population actually reads books anymore? What would you guess? I've always hovered around the 15% mark (grimly). But according to the latest Verso Ad Network's extensive 2009 Consumer Book Survey--28% of the US population are "avid readers,", spending 5+ hours a week with a book, and the 65+ age group is twice as avid as those who are 25-34.
The Maine Sunday Telegram calls THE GHOST TRAP a "good mid-winter read."
The Ghost Trap tells the story of a 27-year-old lobster fisherman faced with huge challenges. Jamie Eugley is the caretaker of his brain-injured girlfriend, Anja. He feels guilty because the accident that rendered her helpless happened on his boat. His life is further complicated when fellow lobstermen start cutting one another's traps in a territory dispute.
