I'm an Australian writer with a book to write that is set partly in Lewiston. I'm planning to stay in Lewiston to research, write and soak up the city for a month or two in 2012. If anyone has any advice or suggestions for where to stay or who to contact about organising a residency-style stay that would be absolutely wonderful!

Friday, May 13 @ 7:00 p.m.
Award winning Maine author, Julia Spencer-Fleming will read from and speak about her newly released seventh book in the Clare Fergusson/Russ Van Alstyne Mystery series, “One was a Soldier” at York Public Library on Friday, May 13 at 7:00 p.m. Having returned from a tour of duty as a helicopter pilot in Iraq, Clare has joined a veteran’s support group with four other vets. When one of the veterans dies, the investigation uncovers a trail of deceit that runs from the tiny Adirondack town to the unforgiving streets of Baghdad. “One was a Soldier” delivers a jaw-dropping story that won’t disappoint fans or newcomers.

You won't want to miss the unique collaboration of musicians and poets at the spring performance of
Women in Harmony, a Portland-based chorus of 58 women's voices. Performing with Pihcintu, a chorus of first-generation immigrant girls, the two choruses will present a concert of poetry set to music, music from many homelands and a rap written by the girls. Save the date: May 14 at 7 pm, and May 15 at 4 pm at Woodfords Congregational Church in Portland.

The Maine Arts Commission has given the chorus an “Artists in Maine Communities” grant of more that $3,000 for its concert, Moving On: Immigration in Song. Choral Arts New England has also awarded the group an Alfred Nash Patterson grant of $1,000 toward the spring concert.

Moving On: Immigration in Song will feature the premiere of (F)light: A Borderlands Song Cycle by Maine composer and former chorus member Erica Quin-Easter. The work explores the theme of immigration in the international border regions of Maine and Arizona. Quin-Easter, who lives in Stockholm, has set to music the writings of two award-winning Arizona poets, Eric Magrane and Wendy Burke. As part of the (F)light project, the poets conducted fieldwork among the border populations of Arizona and northern Maine, including the Acadian, Native-American, and working waterfront communities. The composer and the poets will present a pre-concert talk about the development of their work on both performance days.

Women in Harmony director Catherine Beller-McKenna says the chorus is “delighted that the Maine Arts Commission and Choral Arts New England have recognized the value to the community of this collaboration. In an economic climate where support of the arts has dwindled, it is reassuring to know that there are organizations supporting innovative projects like this one.”

Now in its 18th year, Women in Harmony espouses a musical mission for social justice.
In keeping with the theme of immigration.

For more information about Women in Harmony, visit www.wihmaine.org.

March 10, 2011

Greetings and Salutations!

My name is Richard Afuma of Portland, Maine. I am seeking for an agent to work on my memoir tentatively titled: “In Pursuit of the Python Trial: Both sides of a Dream.” I am a naturalized American citizen from Cameroon and have lived in the beautiful and vibrant state of Maine for almost a quarter century. The book extrapolates my coiling, snaking and curving life experiences in the two cultures that I have lived –Cameroon and the United States. A proposal comprising of a preface, 2 sample chapters and an outline would be ready at the end of March and a complete second draft manuscript of approximately 325 pages in July. If any of you knows an agent/publisher interested in this type of non-fiction, please, let me know. rngong2003@yahoo.com (207) 899.5117

For those in the Portland area seeking a writing class, I teach two courses at UNE in 8 week segments. These groups are on-going. Next start-up will be in mid/late March. Tuesdays, we have A Gathering of Writers. We start by reviewing one aspect of craft then read examples, and write for an hour or so. We then meet, read and give feedback on what has been produced. Craft & Critique is an advanced group for those working on specific projects. Enrollment is limited. All sessions take place at the Maine Women Writers Collection. I am a published poet, recent MFA graduate with several projects in the works.

Hello Maine Writers

I am a Feldenkrais® practitioner offering an integrative mind/body approach to movement function. Basically, we facilitate movement possibilities that went unnoticed and train in being able to return to that realm of movement possibilities in order to make changes and upgrade/refresh oneself.

I am also a visual artist; painter & designer and have relished the poetic metaphor inherent in this work. I am interested in offering verbally directed group movement sessions that I would call: "Moving Dialogues" to the writer/poet. I am curious to explore and identify how this "vehicle" may support creativity.
The process would at least bring about a feeling of well-being in your body!

If anyone is interested, please contact me. I am in Portland.

I edited the letter to one page so we can hand deliver to this idea to community businesses. Share what you think of the new draft. Thanks.

Lewiston-Auburn Writers Network Community Letter Writing Project 2011

Have you ever struggled to write a purposeful letter for a friend, family member or yourself? Has your writing hand begun to twitch from the memory of that experience? Yes. Then please keep reading.

This volunteer project is to create a local network of people in various occupations willing to donate their practical writing skills. Your writing skills CAN meet various community needs. For the rest of December observe the space your employer has provided or the freedom of the workspace that you painstakingly created. How are your written words accomplishing daily business goals? Now envision the impact your word skills can carry beyond the economic atmosphere of your individual work setting?

As an aspiring writer, I'd prefer to play in my safe pile of poetic and fictional fun. However, being a single parent keeps me grounded and prompts me to ask what purpose is writing if not to reciprocate to what my own community expresses through daily living?

Letters can move mountains of obstacles when we encourage ourselves or others to see them written and delivered. Your letter may secure a job seeker’s employment and an auto shop might authorize a payment plan until the new employee receives their first paycheck. Your letter might enable that employee to secure a home loan even as a new hire or their child with special needs might gain access to a preferred school district. In return, the exampled head of household may sit down and provide a letter in kind to meet another community need overheard in a Sunday morning church pew or in between the lines of newsprint their family dog snow stamped before daylight.

So over the holiday season, if you happen to remember reading this note, ask the long-time-no-see dinner table visitor on your left, your right and across the table..."Hey, do you have any practical writing skills you use on a daily basis? Have you thought of networking and sharing those skills in your community?" If they aren't choking for an answer or fumbling with their fork, invite them to mail me their ideas.

To express a true interest in this community project please participate in Step 1.

Step 1: Write a handwritten or typed letter describing your interest or ideas, addressed to:

I appreciate the time you spent reading about my idea.

November 22, 2010

L/A Writers Network facilitator, Shannon Blake, is looking for information and/or volunteers from the Lewiston Auburn Community….
My day job is in a cubicle, my daughter lovingly calls my little square ditch (her reaction to Bring our daughter to work day). Fortunately, she does enjoy that I facilitate two small writing groups in my community, because she now knows the library shelves as if they were her own. So here is where I come to the point of how I would like your help to accomplish a wish of mine, to meet community needs through practical letter writing. Maybe some of you have friends or family who have utilized this skill and would like to post some links to help me get start this effort one letter at a time. With your help...I'm also looking for opportunities and resources on grant writing to support this effort.
Why I'm passionate about this idea...
Well when it comes to writing I'd prefer to play in my pile of poetic and fictional fun...however, being a single parent keeps me grounded and asking myself what purpose is writing if not to help reciprocate to what your own community conveys to you through daily living? I'm no different than many mothers when it comes to the end of a long day, juggling tasks of necessity and laughing the way only your child can spark it...and some days when the coffee gives us a second wind (I gave up on naps, never happened, never will) moms put the what if we had the opportunity to create [blank] in our community with people willing to donate their time and make a long lasting difference?
What I wish to populate the blank with is the creation of a network of local writers in various occupations who already use specific daily writing skills who would see the impact their writing skills could have on families in their own community. There are so many ways a well written letter can have such a positive impact on a family in need. I have experienced the intimidation of having to write letters on behalf of my daughter and myself. Letters can move mountains of obstacles when we encourage ourselves or others to see them written and delivered. Maybe you have been blessed by a letter a friend or family member wrote of your behalf...what about the individual you met who didn't have someone to pen a letter on their behalf, what answer could they have been blessed with from you or someone you know that could have come thru a writing network like the one I'm brainstorming?
Some examples where we all could communicate through letter writing in our community...it could even be anonymously authored and delivered for so many purposes, here are a few*:
A child may make it into a preferred school district
A member of your church may receive an unspecified need
A daycare opening may become available
A house loan may be secured
A car may receive repair
A new job could be secured through your letter of recommendation without the candidate being asked
*The list is any number of things you stopped at the tip of your tongue and didn't think you had time to budge with your pen...see my point?
So over the holiday season, if you happen to remember reading this note, ask the long time no see dinner table visitor on you left and your right and across the table..."Hey, do you have any practical writing skills you use on a daily basis, have you thought of networking and sharing your skills in your community?" If they aren't choking for an answer or fumbling with their fork, invite them to e-mail me their ideas.
Some ideas can never be accomplished alone and definitely not if you want to become a positive part of your community. This is super important to me for a lot of reasons...and you may participate for your own unique reasons.
Happy Thanksgiving and the time you spent reading. Please ask questions and submit suggestions on how I could present this idea more clearly. My writing friends are probably shaking their heads already...more information please, right?
To express a true interest in this community project please participate in Step 1 then e-mail address can be provided. Step 1: Write a handwritten or typed letter describing your interest in this volunteer project, addressed to:

I write women's fiction and YA novels and am searching for a critique partner or writing group. I'm located in Newcastle, but open to working with another writer who is comfortable critiquing manuscripts exchanged via email.

If there are MWPA members in the Bath or Rockland area that would like to start a writers’ group I would love to chat. Either way, initial contact can be made via email: aliceo@roadrunner.com

* Call or Email to Confirm! To meet, we need at least 3 attendees total, so please check in and confirm first before attending. If we don’t have enough confirmations, or if the weather is bad, the meeting will be postponed. Space is limited to around 20 people, so call now! :-)

* Food & Drink: Since we’re meeting at dinner time, folks can purchase food if they wish.

* Types of Writing: Fiction, nonfiction, short stories, poetry, articles, essays, humor; anything except boring technical manuals. Work can be finished or unfinished, whole or in sections. Writing can be targeted to adults or children, and should be palatable for a mixed audience. No graphic horror, excessive profanity, or erotica.

You’re invited!

I have my MFA from the Iowa Writers' Workshop and teach at three local colleges and universities. I have also worked as the Asst. Fiction Editor for an international literary journal. I currently live in Gray.

If anyone is interested in having their manuscripts edited and critiqued I'm offering my services for a fair fee (we can work something out based on the size of your project and the amount of time you'd like me to invest -- electronic/phone and in-person consultations are all things I'm happy to do). I am able to line-edit manuscripts and offer typed, thoughtful feedback and criticism which can help you take your story or novel to the next level.

Contact me at joehessert@yahoo.com if you're interested or you would like to get some pricing information. If you include your phone number in the email I would be happy to discuss things over the phone if you prefer. Thanks for your time!

My friend Elizabeth Trice has been working for several months to create a coworking space in Portland, and we're hoping that you will spread the word to people who work alone or from home, or are with small organizations, and would like to be part of a work community.
Peter Bass is building a new two story building on the former Binga's Winga's site at Bramhall Square on Congress Street, due to open in January, 2011. The space will be called Peloton Labs. It will have large open spaces with tables, couches, public workplaces, private desks, offices, and conference rooms, as well as a deck, a kitchen, a cafe, and south-facing windows. We plan to use a monthly membership model that focuses on building a community that enhances creativity and collaboration.
In the next few months we will be holding social events and potential members will be invited to help us make decisions as to the design and operation of the space.
Visit our website:
People interested in helping to build the community (no commitment necessary) can click "join" in the upper right hand corner.
Thanks,
Thatcher
